It is delicious. But I did not know then how cruel it is. I thought that it was just part of a whole shark, that would be taken and eaten, just like e.g. tuna. I never knew that the fins were lopped off then the fish chucked back to flounder and die. Horrible. So I certainly support this ban. But as I say, back then in Malaya, in the early sixties, it was a delicious start to a meal.
It is rather like pate de foie gras. Also delicious. But when I visited a foie gras farm in the France, in Gascony, and saw how it is made by force feeding the birds, I was horrified. I would never eat it again.
I wonder what other gastronomic delights are similarly cruel.
DavidDavid Radcliffenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-460062076455326962.post-82006407221239472632011-11-20T14:53:12.377-05:002011-11-20T14:53:12.377-05:00The cause is probably worthy but municipal governm...The cause is probably worthy but municipal government should stick to dealing with municipal matters. Blowing council and staff time on matters properly of provincial or federal jurisdiction or interest is irresponsible. It also may attract expensive legal action where the municipality legislates ultra vires. Likewise, legislation of symbolic rather than practical purpose should be resolutely eschewed.Robert Austinnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-460062076455326962.post-69360516872131922862011-11-20T10:21:15.580-05:002011-11-20T10:21:15.580-05:00The practice of shark finning has driven the world...The practice of shark finning has driven the world's shark populations to the brink of extinction thereby threatening the very health of the world's oceans.

Sharks are on the verge of extinction; 90% of the world's sharks have been wiped out. This is happening at the rate of 190 sharks per minute.

Shark fin products are not a food staple but merely a symbol of status and cruel tradition.

Progressive cities such as Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville and Brantford that have already banned these unacceptable products.

It is these municipal initiatives that will demonstrate to the government that this issue is important to Canadians and pave the way for an import ban on shark fin products.

Please e-mail or phone your councillor and urge their support on a ban of shark fin products when the issue comes to council on Monday Nov. 21st.
It is also very important to show support for this ban by being present at the Council meeting which starts at 5pm (shark issue will probably not come up until about 6pm)
Hope to see you there!
thanks
florineFlorine Morrisonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-460062076455326962.post-69559072664038678602011-11-18T19:02:50.022-05:002011-11-18T19:02:50.022-05:00@anonymous Does the shark get a say in any of this...@anonymous Does the shark get a say in any of this?Bob Brennannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-460062076455326962.post-12191942835775297342011-11-18T16:18:40.889-05:002011-11-18T16:18:40.889-05:00Although I completely agree that using a shark'...Although I completely agree that using a shark's fins for soup is completely unjustifiable and the practice of taking the fin is cruel, I still believe that it is up to INDIVIDUAL's to decide whether to eat such a soup or not. It is not up to a local government to take a stand on this at all. There is too much interference in individual choice already and people must be allowed to make their own minds up about such a practice. We may not like it but we have no right to TELL other people what to think or do. Education is the key, not another ban/bylaw that is impossible to enforce.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-460062076455326962.post-31472419897245366452011-11-18T08:20:15.731-05:002011-11-18T08:20:15.731-05:00You're quite right, Google "shark fin sou...You're quite right, Google "shark fin soup" and one immediately has the whole story.

According to an article in the Globe and Mail: "The soup, which is often served at Chinese weddings but has been blamed for declining shark numbers around the world, has traditionally been a “must” for lavish, elaborate Chinese banquet hall dinners. But there are signs of a shift, said Carmen Luk, a Toronto area wedding planner whose clients are primarily of Chinese decent."

" 'The last Chinese wedding I had, the couple did not want it,' Ms. Luk said."

You have far more insight into this than the committee members. Maybe the city could have a "learn to use Google" class to bring all up to speed and into the 21st century.Rockinonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16466451909515114927noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-460062076455326962.post-55514985831755168592011-11-18T08:17:48.922-05:002011-11-18T08:17:48.922-05:00The sophisticated level of political discourse dis...The sophisticated level of political discourse displayed by our city hall reps blows the mind and boggles the imagination.

How lucky can we get!

anon oneAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-460062076455326962.post-57659910748391281812011-11-18T04:49:50.881-05:002011-11-18T04:49:50.881-05:00Do these people not read the news?Do these people not read the news?Mike Sloannoreply@blogger.com
