Saving money is an important value, but this seems to me to be more of an investment than a gamble. So, I am pleased with the result of last night's vote.<br /><br />For a long time I did not care about downtown, and still rarely go there. Even now, I only go to the Central library and prefer to shop closer to my home. But,I have come to agree that a downtown is the face that a city shows to the world. Even though I don't personally go downtown much, I accept that downtown really matters. <br /><br />Heritage also matters of course, but changing skylines and taller buildings are also part of a growing downtown. Even though I support the merchants closer to my home, I am excited to see how downtown merchants will thrive and develop when all those students move in.<br /><br />Those merchants might be selling graphic novels, consumer electronics and lots of coffee instead of home furnishings but they will create hustle and activity. <br /><br />A lot of work went into this on all sides of the debate and I hope that any ill feelings will now be put aside. There is no shame in disagreeing and good people see things differently. This was an important decision and Londoners can be assured that all aspects of this were thoroughly explored and the decisions were not made lightly.
